Job summary

Manage, maintain, and optimize the Automation and Operational Technology (OT) systems of the Water Desalination Plant to ensure safe, secure, and reliable plant operations. Responsible for the performance, availability, cybersecurity, and lifecycle management of the Distributed Control System (DCS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI), industrial communication networks, historians, and OT infrastructure while supporting continuous improvement and digital transformation initiatives.

Key responsibilities

Duties 

  • Maintain and optimize DCS, PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems to ensure continuous and reliable plant operation.
  • Monitor system health, alarms, communication status, and controller performance.
  • Perform configuration, programming, and modifications of automation systems in accordance with approved Management of Change (MOC) procedures.
  • Ensure backup and restoration of automation software and configurations.
  • Maintain system documentation and software version control.
  • Manage Operational Technology (OT) infrastructure including industrial servers, workstations, engineering stations, operator consoles, industrial switches, firewalls, and network equipment.
  • Monitor OT network performance and system availability.
  • Ensure redundancy systems remain fully operational.
  • Coordinate system upgrades and hardware replacements.
  • Implement and maintain OT cybersecurity controls in accordance with company policies and international standards.
  • Monitor cybersecurity events and coordinate incident response activities.
  • Support periodic vulnerability assessments and security audits.
  • Diagnose and resolve automation system faults, communication failures, controller issues, and software-related problems.
  • Provide technical support during plant operations and maintenance activities.
  • Support emergency troubleshooting to minimize plant downtime.
  • Investigate recurring automation issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support automation and control system projects.
  • Conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning activities, if required.
  • Verify contractor deliverables and documentation.

Coordination, stakeholder & communication management 

  • Coordinate closely with other departments to ensure the availability, reliability, and security of automation and OT systems.
  • Liaise with O&M team to plan automation maintenance activities, controller changes, software updates, and system testing.
  • Coordinate with O&M team during logic modifications, alarm testing, equipment commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Work closely with the IT department to ensure proper segregation between IT and OT networks while coordinating cybersecurity controls, system backups, disaster recovery, and network connectivity.
  • Work with E&IC team during instrumentation integration, PLC programming, communication testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Liaise with Supply Chain and Warehouse regarding procurement of automation hardware, software licenses, spare parts, communication equipment, and technical services and other OT system related work.
  • Coordinate with OEMs, system integrators, software vendors, and contractors for technical support, upgrades, warranty services, and specialized maintenance activities.
  • Work closely with EHS team to ensure compliance with Permit-to-Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), cybersecurity procedures, and operational risk assessments during plant activities.
  • Participate in project meetings, technical reviews, cybersecurity assessments, maintenance planning meetings, shutdown planning, and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Report system performance, cybersecurity risks, automation issues, equipment failures, and improvement recommendations to the Engineering Manager.
  • Report critical automation failures, OT cybersecurity incidents, communication failures, and operational risks to minimize plant downtime and maintain operational continuity.

  • Follow all relevant policies, processes, and standard operating procedures so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining confidentiality and privacy of company data, as well as adhering to cybersecurity, security, and safety standards, following professional ethics and behavioral standards.
  • Ensure compliance with company engineering standards, OT cybersecurity policies, automation procedures, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Report significant automation, cybersecurity, operational, or compliance issues to the Engineering Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job qualifications and experience requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years relevant experience in industrial automation, DCS/ PLC systems, instrumentation, and control engineering.
  • Preferably experience in desalination, water/ wastewater treatment, power generation, oil & gas, or continuous processing industries.
  • SWRO desalination experience is an advantage but not mandatory.
  • work knowledge with DCS/ PLC/ SCADA/ HMI systems,
  • Ability to troubleshoot control system and instrumentation issues.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication networks such as Modbus and Ethernet.
  • Understanding of process control fundamentals and alarm management.
  • Knowledge of system backup and change management procedures.
  • Familiar with control logic and equipment interlocks.
  • Experience in PLC programming and control logic modification.
  • Experience with at least one major automation platform such as Siemens, AB, Schneider, Emerson, Honeywell, Yokogawa, or Xinhua.
  • Familiarity with controller architecture, redundancy concepts, communication drivers, historian integration, firmware/database management, and controlled online change management in live plants.
